CAMDEN — Camden resident Michael Skaling will share plans to historically restore the Curtis Island Light Station during a free Sunset Seminar presentation at the Camden Yacht Club at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31.
Acting as a natural breakwater to Camden Harbor, Curtis Island has been an important coastal fixture to sailors for hundreds of years. Now, the island’s lighthouse, keeper’s house and other historic structures on the island need substantial restoration, according to the Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation.
The Town of Camden and a new foundation dedicated to restoring Curtis Island Lighthouse are signing a memorandum of understanding, and each will be pitching in money to fund a third-party assessment of the property, and a plan for its future.
The decision was made Dec. 5 at a regularly scheduled Select Board meeting after Camden Historic Resources Committee volunteer member Michael Skaling delivered a presentation about the iconic lighthouse and island that graces the entrance to Camden Harbor.
